Something from Captivating (chpt 3-6), directly taken from quotations and words in [] are my own to make things flow:
Chapter 3: Haunted by a Question
- Even when relationships are good, it's never enough. We are more keenly aware of our own shortcomings than anyone else.
- [Eve] convinced that in order to have the best possible life, she must take matters into her own hands. Woman is cursed with lonliness, urge to control and dominance of men (which is not how things were meant to be, and we are not saying it is a good thing - it is the fruit of the Fall and a sad fact of history).
- We are not inviting - we are guarded. Most of our [controlling women] energy is spent trying to hide our true selves, and control our worlds to have some sense of security. Fallen Eve controls her relationships. She refuses to be vulnerable. And if she cannot secure her relationships, then she kills her heart's longing for intimacy so that she will be safe and in control..... something precious in us is lost. Something the world needs very much from us. Desolate women also tend to hide their true selves. We are certain that if others really knew us, they wouldn't like us - and we can't risk the loss of a relationship. We hide our truest selves and offer only what we believe is wanted, what is safe.
- All of our hearts ache. All of our hearts are at some level unsatisfied and longing. Every woman knows now that she is not what she was meant to be. That is a woman's worse fear - abandonment. Failure is a man's worse fear.
- Women learn from their mothers what it means to be a woman, and from their fathers the value that a woman has.But Adam fell, as did Eve, and the fathers and mothers most of us had continued the sad story. They did not provide the things our hearts needed in order to become lovely, vulnerable, strong, adventurous women.
- You cannot be alive very long without being wounded. Take a deep look into the eyes of anyone and behind the smile or the fear, you will find pain. And most people are in more pain than even they realize.
- What was your childhood lik? What lessons did you learn as a little girl? What did your parents want from you? Were you delighted in? Did you know to the core of your being that you were loved, special, worth protecting, and wanted?
- Shame says we are unworthy, broken, and beyond repair. Shame makes us feel very uncomfortale with our beauty.
- The wounds you have received have come to you for a purpose from the one who knows all you are meant to be and fears you. [Not a refernce to God but to Satan]
- He [Satan] hates it with a jealousy we can only imagine, hates Eve because she gives life. He brings death. She is a lifesaver and a life giver. You uniquely carry the glory of God to the world. You are hated because of your beauty and power.
- You are passionately loved by the God of the universe. You are passionately hated by his Enemy.
- You, dear heart, are the crown of creation, his glorious image bearer. And eh will do everything it takes to rescue you and set your heart free. Now the Son of God has come to ransom you, and to heal your broken, wounded, bleeding heart, and to set you free from bondage.
- "He told me that I didn't need to defend myself anymore, that was his job."
- Grief is a form of validation; it says the wound mattered.
- Forgiveness is a choice. Forgiveness says "It was wrong. Very wrong. It mattered, hurt me deeply. And I realse you. I give you to God."
- The only reason I said yes to God, the only reason I would travel there [bad memories], was because I knew he would go with me. Hand in hand. He would hold my heart. and I had come to trust his.
- What if you have a genuine and captivating beauty that is marred only by your striving?
